Natural gas leaks and repair failures
Gas leaks pose both safety and climate risks, and fixing these leaks can be a cost-effective approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This map shows gas leaks and repairs from 2014-2018 and estimates the rate of repair failure, where a gas utility identifies and fixes a leak but on-site emissions are not eliminated. While repairing leaks is still more cost-effective than replacing pipelines, repair failures highlight the benefits of improving targeted leak repair while also accelerating transitions away from natural gas.
